At the end of June, the structures of PKP PLK in Wałbrzych addressed to several local self-governments a letter preceding liquidation of sections of selected railway lines in Lower Silesia. Apart from inappropriate representation of the Company, the above communication – as proved in later press releases – contained a number of statements and phrases which are not true as to, among others, the dates of cessation of operations and lack of interest of railway operators in using the infrastructure.

Further doubts regarding the matter were raised by a statement of the spokesperson of PKP PLK dated 9 September whereby the costs generated by unused assets stood at approximately PLN 0.25 million annually. That statement was contrary to previous information whereby maintenance of the infrastructure in question generated loss of millions. The amount was also strikingly different from the costs declared during talks and negotiations regarding handing over the unused lines to entities interested in their operation.

Pro Kolej Foundation requested that PKP PLK explain the existing situation. At the same time, with a view to ensuring transparency of the process and the future of public assets – it called to cease the process of liquidation of the railway infrastructure in the area of Lower Silesia until the matter is explained, the more so that in its current form it is chaotic and it does not account for the tendency for railway transport to regain its key role in the economy and social mobility.
